Barbie Movie Is Officially Happening with Margot Robbie

The Barbie movie is officially a go at Warner Bros. and Margot Robbie will bring the iconic doll to life on the big screen. Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie, launched their own movie company, Mattel Films, late last year in order to turn some of their beloved toy lines into franchises. Now, they’ve locked down a deal with Warner Bros. to make the first of those movies happen. Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, had this to say about the new deal in a statement.
“This project is a great start to our partnership with Ynon and Mattel Films. And Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”
We first heard that Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie was up for the role back in October, but the details were still being ironed out. Originally, the idea was to have Amy Schumer play the lead in the Barbie movie, a decision that was met with some backlash online. Then it appeared as though Anne Hathaway was possibly going to land the gig, before the studio settled on Robbie, who is known for her roles in movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad and I, Tonya. Robbie had this to say in a statement.
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
Margot Robbie will also be a producer on the project via her LuckyChap Entertainment company. Details on the plot are currently being kept under wraps, and it also isn’t clear just how soon the movie will enter production. Robbie will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey next month, so Barbie likely wouldn’t be able to get off the ground until after that at the earliest. Ynon Kreiz, chairman and CEO of Mattel, had this to say about the new partnership with Warner Bros.

“Barbie is one of the most iconic franchises in the world and we are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie to bring her to life on the big screen. We look forward to building on this collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures as we tell the stories of our beloved brands. Mattel Films is on a path to demonstrate the enormous potential of our brand portfolio, as we continue to execute on our strategy of transforming Mattel into an IP-driven, high performing toy company.”
If this goes well, it’s likely that Mattel could partner with Warner Bros. for future projects, which would give the studio some new skin in the big franchise game. At the present time, there is no word on who may direct the Barbie movie, nor is there any indication as to a possible release date. This news was previously reported by Variety.
