Captain Marvel Directors Weigh in on Nick Fury’s Eye and Why It Had to Be a Flerken

Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck discuss Nick Fury’s eye loss in the movie. The legend of Fury’s eye has changed a few times in the comics, but the first time was when a Nazi grenade went off near him and he didn’t react fast enough. However, that was the first version of the character. The second time was during the Iraq War in Kuwait when he and his team fell under attack. Obviously, this all changed, like a lot of Fury’s backstory for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In Captain Marvel, Nick Fury falls in love with Carol Danvers’ cat Goose, even when he finds out she’s an alien Flerken, capable of some incredible things. Goose doesn’t enjoy the way she’s being held and she scratches Fury’s left eye. At first, it doesn’t look too bad, but it was enough to get infected and Fury lost his eye by the end of the movie. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck talked about the eye in the commentary on the Blu-ray release. Boden had this to say.
“People ask if we always knew the Flerken was going to be responsible for Nick Fury losing his eye and we didn’t know it would happen exactly that way, but it seemed pretty clear that when we had a Flerken in this movie, it was going to be responsible for taking Nick Fury’s eye.”
In 2014’s Captain America, Nick Fury says, “The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye.” Well, that person is a cat, or alien, named Goose in the MCU. Back in the early 1990s, Fury trusted Goose and if she’s still alive, he probably still does. It’s pretty amazing how the MCU is able to keep nearly everything straight throughout all of their movies, keeping them all connected.
Avengers: Endgame might have thrown a monkey wrench into the aforementioned continuity. A lot of snaps went down and the universe has changed, which we will see when Spider-Man: Far From Home opens in theaters next month, with Nick Fury there to hopefully explain some of the changes that have gone down since Tony Stark sacrificed his life to save the universe. We know the Elementals have arrived in Europe due to a tear in the universe, so there could be a lot more changes waiting in the MCU.

Captain Marvel is now available on Blu-ray, which comes with a variety of different bonus features, depending on where it is bought. Director commentary is available on all editions, which is where we found out the extra Goose information from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Hopefully we’ll hear some more information about the future of Carol Danvers in the near future as the MCU’s Phase 4 prepares to launch. Until then, you can head over to Marvel to purchase the Captain Marvel Blu-ray.
