Latest Birds of Prey Set Photos Have a Better Look at Harley Quinn’s Return

Harley Quinn is back with a brand new style in the latest set photos from Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie originated the role in director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad back in 2016 and Warner Bros. has been eager to get the Oscar-nominee back in front of the camera for another go as the beloved DC character. That’s finally becoming a reality as this Harley-centric spin-off kicked off production last week and now, some new photos have surfaced online showcasing Robbie’s new look
The new set photos reveal Harley Quinn in her new outfit, which was initially teased by Margot Robbie on Instagram as production got underway and was also showed off in the brief teaser released by the studio, which gave us very quick looks at the main players in this female-fronted DC Comics adaptation. This latest batch of photos doesn’t reveal anything too shocking or revelatory, but it does offer quite a few shots of Robbie in costume on set. However, if this is the first time someone is seeing Harley’s new look, it’s going to be surprising.
In Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn was featured in very short red and white shorts with a shirt that says “Daddy’s Lil’ Monster.” In this case, she looks rave-ready in some black striped, short jean shorts, a pink halter top, suspenders and sleeves that look like cut up cheerleader pom poms. It’s a radical change and, for what it’s worth, still nowhere near any of the character’s classic looks from Batman: The Animated Series or the comics. But still, it does showcase the larger changes that DC Films is making behind the scenes following the failure of Justice League at the box office. They fully intend to ride the $1 billion wave of Aquaman into the future.

Birds of Prey centers on a “girl gang” trio comprised of Harley Quinn, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) who will be tasked with taking down Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) in Gotham City. Reportedly, Batman will be absent from Gotham for reasons that have yet to be explained. But, since Ben Affleck is no longer playing the character, that certainly has something to do with it. The cast also includes Rosie Perez as Gotham City PD officer Renee Montoya and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, one of the figures in the world of DC Comics who eventually takes up the mantle of Batgirl.
By no mere coincidence, Warner Bros. is also developing a Batgirl movie. Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), who penned this movie, is also currently writing that project following Joss Whedon’s departure. The studio is also still developing several other movies that will feature Harley Quinn, including Gotham City Sirens. Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is in the director’s chair for this one. Birds of Prey is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020. Be sure to check out the set pics below. This news was first reported by Just Jared
