Martin Scorsese’s New Bob Dylan Documentary Is Coming to Netflix This Year

After years of persistent rumors, it’s been confirmed that Martin Scorsese has indeed teamed up with Bob Dylan for the new documentary Rolling Thunder Revue. The two previously worked together on 2005’s No Direction Home but this time around, the legendary filmmaker will be chronicling the events of one of Dylan’s most famous tours, his 1975-1976 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. The best part? The movie will be arriving on Netflix later this year.
According to a new report, even a release date for the documentary remains “months away,” but Netflix has confirmed that the movie is coming this year, in addition to a few key details. The movie will be titled Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese. While billed as a documentary, it’s said to not be quite as straightforward as No Direction Home was, but how exactly Scorsese intends to mix things up remains to be seen. It’s also going to feature a very rare on-camera interview from Bob Dylan himself which, on its own, should make this well worthwhile for hardcore fans, or fans of music in general. The company also provided a brief synopsis for the documentary, which reads as follows.
“Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese captures the troubled spirit of America in 1975 and the joyous music that Dylan performed during the fall of that year. Part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream, Rolling Thunder is a one of a kind experience, from master filmmaker Martin Scorsese.”
Bob Dylan has had his fair share of memorable tours, but the Rolling Thunder Revue tour is notable, since the musician was showing up to play theaters with a revolving cast of special guests, with very little notice. Guests on the tour included the likes of Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Ringo Starr, Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell. It’s expected that the documentary will feature interviews with other performers from the tour, and those interviews were conducted by the musician’s longtime manager, Jeff Rosen.
As for Martin Scorsese, his deep appreciation for music, and specifically Bob Dylan, goes way back. One of the filmmaker’s early features, The Last Waltz, chronicles The Band’s last ever performance and also features Bob Dylan. This also marks the second high-profile project Scorsese has slated for Netflix this year, as his movie The Irishman, which stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, is slated to arrive later this year as well.
This also isn’t the only high-profile Bob Dylan project being planned currently. Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is also planning a dramatic narrative adaptation of his album Blood on the Tracks, which is expected to be his next movie. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details on Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese are made available. This news was first reported by Variety.
