Marvel Fans Petition to Bring RDJ’s Iron Man Back to the MCU

Another day, another petition. In this case, a certain section of Marvel fans are calling for Marvel Studios to bring back Iron Man after his fate in Avengers: Endgame. That seems highly unlikely, unrealistic and logistically improbable, but that isn’t stopping thousands of people from voicing their support for the idea.
Spoilers for those who perhaps haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame yet, but Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark pays the ultimate price in the battle against Thanos, as he gives his life in order to stop the Mad Titan. This means he doesn’t get to see his daughter grow up, nor does he get to live out his happy life with Pepper. As such, a petition started by someone going by the name of Méline Loiseau wants to see this reversed. The petition reads as follows.
“MCU’s Tony deserves to come back fully alive. Tony Stark was always ready to risk his life, suffer, and sacrifice himself for anyone, without ever receiving anything in return. Since the beginning, since he was a kid. He can never be happy, and when he finally got what he always wanted, and deserved, his wife, his daughter, his family… he died. He didn’t deserve this and it’s not fair, after everything he’s been through, and done for everyone, he deserves to live and see his daughter grow up.”
As of this writing, the petition has just shy of 18 thousand signatures and counting. Robert Downey Jr. kicked off the MCU with the first Iron Man in 2008. In the eleven years since, we’ve all become terribly attached to him and it’s understandable that nobody wants to see him go. Yet, an actor can’t play the same part forever and RDJ surely wants to explore other things. Not to mention that his death really meant something in connects to the larger MCU story. Bringing him back would feel cheap. Méline Loiseau further explains the reason for the petition.
“He has helped so many people (in the mcu and in our world), he has helped people to live (including me) to overcome their problems, to accept themselves, to face life. He’s so important. He saved our lives and it’s our turn to save him. We love him so much. We love him 3000. Without him, now, we are totally lost. For many people, he was their reason to live and hold on in life.”
While it’s true that these heroes are inspiring to many, people shouldn’t put so much stock in fictional stories. It’s not real life. At the end of the day, as much as we may be invested in these stories, they’re here to entertain. For what it’s worth, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have also made it clear that Iron Man is done in the MCU, as far as they know. So don’t expect anything to come of this petition. But those interested in checking it out can head over to Change.org.
