McCarthy, Moss & Haddish Join the Mafia

New Line Cinema has dropped the first trailer for The Kitchen. The movie is a gritty, female-driven mob drama, written and directed by Andrea Berloff. Berloff is best known for her Academy Award nominated Straight Outta Compton screenplay, in addition to her acting and directing work. Right from the start, the movie doesn’t look like what one would think it is with Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish leading the cast. Many instantly believe the project is going to be a comedy, but that definitely is not the case this time around.
The Kitchen stars Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) as three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp axe to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands after being given protection while their husband serve the rest of their 24-month sentences. Ultimately, the women prove to be unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition, which is when the real problems start to take hold.
In addition to Melissa McCarthy (Kathy Brennan), Elisabeth Moss (Claire Walsh), and Tiffany Haddish (Ruby O’Carroll), The Kitchen also stars Domhnall Gleeson (The Last Jedi), James Badge Dale (Only the Brave), Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight), with Margo Martindale (The Americans), Common (Selma), Bill Camp (Vice), Jeremy Bobb, E.J. Bonilla, Wayne Duvall, Annabella Sciorra, and Myk Watford. The impressive cast is teased in the first trailer for the mob drama, but with that being said, it’s Moss, Haddish, and McCarthy’s show. The project looks pretty dark and a like a nice departure for most of the talented cast involved.
Andrea Berloff’s screenplay for The Kitchen is based on the comic book series created for DC Vertigo by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle of the same name. The movie is produced by Michael De Luca and Marcus Viscidi. Richard Brener, Michael Disco, Dave Neustadter, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Elishia Holmes, and Adam Schlagman serve as executive producers. Berloff’s creative team includes director of photography Maryse Alberti, production designer Shane Valentino, editor Christopher Tellefsen, and costume designer Sarah Edwards. The music was composed by Bryce Dessner.
Production on The Kitchen took place in New York City from May 2018 to September after the cast signed on in late 2017 and early 2018. The movie is all set to officially hit theaters on August 9th and looks like it could be a late summer box office success, especially with the cast attached to it. Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish all have huge careers on their own and could easily headline their own projects.
