Sandra Bullock & Netflix Reunite for Millarworld Sci-Fi Fantasy Reborn

Netflix is adapting Mark Millar’s acclaimed comic book Reborn into a movie, with an A-list team on board. Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock will produce the project, with Vertigo Entertainment, one of the producers behind the breakout Stephen King adaptation IT, also on board. Chris McKay, known for his work on The LEGO Batman movie and Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken, has been tapped to direct. Millar himself will also be involved creatively as an executive producer.
According to a new report, Sandra Bullock is currently locked in as a key producer for Reborn. However, there is a chance that she may end up actually playing the lead role in the sci-fi/fantasy adaptation. Bullock most recently appeared in Netflix’s Bird Box, which has gone on to become a sensation and one of the streaming service’s biggest success stories, in terms of their original content, to date. As such, it makes sense that they would involve her in future projects, and assuming they can get the deal done, it would make even more sense to have the respected and beloved actress at the forefront of the adaptation.
Reborn centers on an eighty-year-old woman named Bonnie Black who passes away in a Manhattan hospital, only to open her eyes in the world of Adystria, a mystical, otherworldly land filled with monsters and dragons. It also happens to be a place where good and evil are waging an eternal war. Bonnie finds herself born again in the prime of her life, with all of her old friends and loved ones waiting, with the exception of her husband, who passed away before she did. Armed with a sword and partnered with her late father, she sets off on a journey through this mysterious and harsh landscape to find out where exactly she is.
In 2017, Netflix made their first acquisition by purchasing Millarworld, Mark Millar’s publishing company. Since then, they’ve been developing projects based around the various titles in his library, which include Wanted, Empress, Kick-Ass, Jupiter’s Legacy, DeKnight and American Jesus. Image Comics initially published Reborn starting in 2016, with the miniseries running for a total of six issues. The book was met with much acclaim upon its release. Chris McKay, meanwhile, has been working with Warner Bros. on a Nightwing movie. However, as they’ve shifted their strategy with DC Films over the course of the last year, that movie has seemed less certain, so that freed him up to jump on board this project.
Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are set to produce for Vertigo Entertainment, with Mark Millar and Greg Capullo on board as executive producers. Samantha Nisenboim will co-produce. There is no word currently on who will pen the screenplay or just how quickly this could end up in production. But with a package of talent likes this, and given Netflix’s hunger for attention-grabbing content, it’s hard to imagine this one sits on the shelf for too long. This news was initially reported by Deadline.
