Scorsese Is Worried The Irishman De-Aging VFX Are Stealing DeNiro’s Edge

The visual effects for The Irishman have Martin Scorsese a little worried. The movie is currently in the post-production process and the director is concerned with the de-aging technology and how it effects the eyes. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are playing younger versions of themselves alongside their current ages, which is some new territory for the actors and Scorsese. The director’s long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker expressed concern over the technology earlier this year when revealing they were working with Industrial Light and Magic.
When Thelma Schoonmaker was discussing The Irishman earlier this year, she said the movie would show the younger actors during one half of the movie and the current age during the other half. However, it looks like there may have been some changes, according to Martin Scorsese, who is still trying to piece everything together in the post-production process. It looks like the movie will end up doing a lot of back and forth through the timeline. Scorsese explains.
“Why I’m concerned, we’re all concerned is that we’re so used to watching them as the older faces. When we put them all together, it cuts back and forth… Now, it’s real. Now, I’m seeing it. Now, certain shots need more work on the eyes, need more work on why these exactly the same eyes from the plate shot, but the wrinkles and things have changed. Does it change the eyes at all? If that’s the case, what was in the eyes that I liked? Was it intensity? Was it gravitas? Was it threat?”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had great success with the de-aging technology over the past few years, but many would argue this year’s Captain Marvel took the tech to a new level. In the movie, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg play Nick Fury and Agent Phil Coulson, respectively, in the early 1990s. They look pretty much exactly like they did in the 90s, but the movie didn’t have them switching back and forth, showing the older and the younger versions side-by-side.
Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and one doesn’t get to be where he is in his career without the immense detail he puts into his projects and the care that he gives every scene. If the eyes aren’t doing Robert De Niro and his performance justice, Scorsese and crew will work until they get what they need to push through. With that being said, they should be able to accomplish their goal.

The Irishman is set to hit theaters and Netflix this fall, as long as Martin Scorsese is able to pull off everything he needs with the visual effects. It’s a pretty massive job and it’s going to be really interesting to see what Robert De Niro and Al Pacino look like as young actors again in a new movie alongside the way they currently look.
