The Conjuring 3 Begins Production, Vera Farmiga Shares First Photo

The Conjuring 3 has officially, and somewhat quietly, kicked off production. The third entry in the highly successful and critically-praised horror franchise has been in the works for some time now. Warner Bros. and New Line, as well as producer James Wan, have been more focused on the spin-offs, like the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home, as of late. But it’s finally time for Ed and Lorraine Warren to make their return in their own movie, as confirmed by star Vera Farmiga.
Vera Farmiga, who stars as paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in the franchise, took to Twitter earlier this week to confirm that production has started on the highly-anticipated sequel. The actress shared a photo of herself alongside co-star Patrick Wilson, who plays her husband and paranormal partner in crime, Ed Warren. The two are seen at a table with scripts in front of them, looking like they’re getting ready to do a read through. Here’s what Farmiga had to say in her caption.
“Happy first day #Conjuring3, Mr. Warren, my PWilz.”
It’s not totally clear, based on the information in the post, if filming has actually started yet. If it hasn’t, it surely will be any day now. It was previously reported that the movie was set to begin filming at the beginning of June. So all seems to be going according to plan. This is undoubtedly welcome news for horror fans. The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 both proved to be well-crafted studio horror movies that found love outside of the hardcore horror-loving crowd. James Wan directed the first two entries to great success and has since moved on to helm major blockbusters like Aquaman, which grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office.
However, James Wan is taking a step back this time around, as he’ll just be producing. Instead, it’s Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona), who will be in the director’s chair. Things are also going to be quite a bit different, in terms of story, in The Conjuring 3. The previous two movies were more or less haunted house adventures. In this case, the story will center on a man who is on trial for murder, who claims he was possessed by a demon at the time of the crime.

In the years since The Conjuring was released in 2013, the franchise has truly exploded. The six movies that have been released so far, including two Annabelle movies, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, have grossed a combined $1.7 billion at the box office. Annabelle Comes Home looks to help take it over the $2 billion mark this summer when it hits theaters later this month.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Aquaman, Orphan) penned the screenplay. The Conjuring 3 is set to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2020. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details are made available. Be sure to check out the post from Vera Farmiga’s Twitter below.
