Tom Clancy’s The Division is coming to Netflix. It’s been announced that the forthcoming movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s best-selling video game franchise has landed at the streaming service, with both Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain attached to star. Director David Leith is also on board to helm the adaptation. The announcement was made by Netflix’s NX Twitter account via the following message.

“[Access Granted. Commencing Transmission] Director David Leitch, Jessica Chastain, and Jake Gyllenhaal are bringing Ubisoft’s The Division to Netflix. It’s the Tom Clancy high-stakes action you love, in the pandemic stricken Manhattan that offers no second chances.”

Ubisoft initially made the announcement as part of their E3 press conference. The news was then confirmed online by Netflix as well, cementing this as a done deal. We first learned that a movie based on the video game was in the works back in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal was attached at the start. Jessica Chastain boarded the project later, with David Leitch landing the gig in April of last year. Stephen Gaghan (Gold) was originally attached to direct. After he departed, the door was left open for Leitch to step in.

This, on paper at least, is a big win for both companies. For Ubisoft, it takes box office out of the equation and will put the project in front of a massive global audience. For Netflix, it’s a potential franchise starter with some big-name talent attached. As the streaming service wars continue to heat up, with Disney+ set to launch later this year, alongside Apple+ and the upcoming WarnerMerdia streaming service, it will be more important than ever for Netflix to develop major projects such as this in order to retain their subscribers.

David Leitch is coming off of a serious hot streak. After co-directing the first John Wick, he went on to helm Atomic Blonde, before making his way to major blockbusters with the highly-successful Deadpool 2. He recently wrapped filming on the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw as well. Jake Gyllenhaal, meanwhile, remains one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors. He starred in another Netflix movie, Velvet Buzzsaw, earlier this year and will be seen as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home next month. Jessica Chastain is one of the most sought after actresses in the business and is showing no signs of slowing down. She’s set to star in IT: Chapter Two later this year and has a slew of other projects coming down the pipeline, including Eve and The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

The Division takes place in the near future and sees virus is spread on Black Friday, which decimates New York City. A group of civilians who are trained to operate in such catastrophes is called upon in an attempt to save those left in the city. The game currently has more than 20 million players worldwide. The Division 2 was released in March of this year. There is no word yet on how soon production will get underway, nor is it clear when the movie will actually be released.
